5. What safety standards do your blinds meet?
Our stock and custom window coverings comply with ANSI/WCMA A100.1–2018, the American National Standard for Safety of Corded Window Covering Products. Failure to meet the operating cord requirements (stock products) or inner cord requirements (stock and custom products) will cause the window covering to be deemed a substantial product hazard under the Consumer Product Safety Act and subject to mandatory reporting requirements. CPSC has added window covering cords that do not meet applicable sections of ANSI/WCMA A100.1‑2018 to the “substantial product hazard” list at 16 CFR § 1120.3(e) and (f). A product on the “substantial product hazard” list is subject to the mandatory reporting requirements of section 15(b) of the CPSA.
Our blinds comply with the applicable operating cord requirements:
-
Cordless operating system: an operating system that does not have an operating cord (includes motorized operating systems);
-
Short static or access cord: an operating cord or band that is fixed in length in any state (free or under tension), to be a length equal to or less than 8 inches;
-
Inaccessible operating cord: operating cords that are inaccessible as determined per the test requirements in Appendix C of ANSI/WCMA A100.1‑2018.
All stock and custom window coverings must have inaccessible inner cords (when tested to Appendix C) and bear the manufacturer label. The rule deems the presence of hazardous operating cords and inner cords on stock window coverings, and hazardous inner cords on custom window coverings, to be a substantial product hazard. This rule goes into effect 180 days after publication in the Federal Register for custom window coverings and 30 days after publication for window covering products manufactured after that date.
6. Are your blinds cordless?
We strongly recommend cordless window coverings, which are the safest option for children. CPSC staff believes that about two-thirds of potentially fatal window covering incidents could be prevented if the looped cords and long operating cords are made inaccessible or made so that a hazardous loop is not formed. Many of our models are cordless; corded models have cords designed to be inaccessible or shorter than 8 inches per the standard.
7. What is a substantial product hazard?
A “substantial product hazard” is a product defect that is substantially risky to the public because of the product’s defect pattern, the number of defective products on sale, or how severe the risk is. CPSC deems stock and custom window coverings that fail to comply with applicable sections of ANSI/WCMA A100.1‑2018 to be substantial product hazards. Products on this list are subject to mandatory reporting requirements. Federal law prohibits any person from selling products subject to a Commission ordered recall or a voluntary recall undertaken in consultation with the CPSC.
8. How do I install my blinds safely?
